Three ways to take part
Everyone at MPI attends the morning masterclass with Marina Piccinini, Beyond the Score: Expression Through Interpretation™. In the afternoons, each participant follows the programme that suits them best.
Performer
Performers play in Marina Piccinini's masterclass, Beyond the Score: Expression Through Interpretation™, which brings together advanced students, young professionals and established artists who wish to deepen their musicianship and develop a truly personal artistic voice. Performers are selected by video audition.
Each Performer brings repertoire of their own choosing, and the music becomes the starting point for a deeper exploration. Professor Piccinini guides each player through the layers of meaning that lie beyond the printed page, from interpretation, style and sound to imagination, instinct and technique, always in the service of more personal and compelling music-making.
Performers work throughout the week with our staff pianist, Dr. Hui-Chuan Chen. They may also take part in Giorgio Consolati's orchestral excerpt class, Inside the Orchestra, and in chamber music sessions led by Hannah Tassler, assisted by Katy Wherry and Giorgio Consolati, and may perform in both the chamber music concert and the closing concert. From time to time, Katy Wherry may invite Performers to join her Open Studio, depending on the work of the day.
Open Studio
Open Studio is for all flutists, professionals, amateurs and teachers alike, who would love to play every day in a warm and supportive setting and go home full of new ideas.
Open Studio participants attend Marina Piccinini's masterclass every morning, then spend their afternoons playing with Katy Wherry. Her sessions are hands-on and varied, and may include tone and technique, an étude of the week explored in depth, improvisation, ensemble playing, informal performances for one another, and conversations about practice, performance and personal goals.
Open Studio participants may also take part in the chamber music sessions led by Hannah Tassler, assisted by Katy Wherry and Giorgio Consolati, and may perform in the chamber music concert.
Auditor
Auditors join us for the full week. They attend every masterclass and are welcome to listen in on all the afternoon sessions. For anyone who would also like to play, Open Studio is a wonderful choice.
Auditors are also invited to an evening of their own with Professor Piccinini: Sunset Drinks, reserved exclusively for auditors.
For everyone
All participants are invited to the opening Gala Opening Concert with Marina Piccinini and the Pacifica Quartet at Zauberklang, the Q&A with Marina Piccinini, the guest lectures, the chamber music concert, the closing concert and the group dinners at the Alp Hotel.
